DIEGO ESPOSITO - LVX ILLVMINAT LVCEM

TERAMO, June 29 - September 10, 2024

The exhibition LVX ILLVMINAT LVCEM renews the deep connection of the artist Diego Esposito with the city of Teramo.
Numerous works are shown in five locations in the historic center, some from past years and many others, most of which, created specifically for the occasion. These are examples of the artist’s different operational types: drawings and watercolors on paper, sculptures in corten or ceramic, monochrome paintings and reliefs, and mosaics.
For Diego Esposito, the relationship between the work and the space in which it is placed has always been fundamental. For this occasion, he has chosen five different city locations that are particularly significant from a spiritual, social, and cultural point of view.
About ten works express his idea of form and color within L’ARCA, Laboratory for Contemporary Arts, located in a twentieth-century building in the city center: the paintings draw inspiration from modern tradition to bring them into the present, also recalling history with the use of gold and the polyptych composition. The possible reference is to Jacobello del Fiore’s altarpiece, an artist dear to Esposito, present in the Cathedral, where a work is placed that draws inspiration from a stone slab on the façade, transforming it into gold and offering the inscription LVX ILLVMINAT LVCEM, the title of the entire exhibition.

In the Regional Library, the paper works are displayed: travel notebooks, sketchbooks, and watercolors created for specific occasions or readings of poetic or philosophical texts, and two large watercolor works on paper.

In the Pinacoteca, there is a diptych that reiterates the ability of art to always be relevant in the contemporaneity of the present: a fragment of a Roman mosaic, recently found in the city, is reproduced and juxtaposed with a new stone weaving typical of other works by the artist, who has often tackled large mosaic surfaces.

Finally, in the Villa Comunale park, in July, a new large sculptural work will be permanently placed: in 2002, his work Naos was already placed in the park during the Exempla 2 exhibition, and it has now been relocated to the University of Studies where, in the modern Coste Sant’Agostino campus at the Faculty of Law, other permanent works and the extensive decoration of the Aula Magna from 2016 can be visited.

The exhibition LVX ILLVMINAT LVCEM marks the return of the artist to his hometown after almost fifty years of residing in Milan, where he taught Painting at the Brera Academy, and in Venice, and of artistic wanderings and long stays, for study and exhibitions, in Greece, France, Turkey, Israel, Japan, Russia, China, Korea, North and South America, and many other important locations around the world. The Latitude/Longitude series from recent years is permanently present in nine different locations, including Teramo, on three continents.
